timing belt probs

Default timing belt probs

hey yal, volvo service manuals state "do not turn crank without belt on" does anyone know why? i have a 1996 960

I think it's to avoid pistons from hitting the cams since the engine is an interference engine.

It bends the valves if the engine cranks over without the belt.
Or if the belt breaks it bends valves.
