I have 97 Volvo 960 with 48,000 careful, well maintained miles. Transmission loses all gears when trying to move forward after braking abruptly after driving in 4th gear. If I let it sit a few minutes, it’s ok again; So far, a transmission shop and 2 Volvo dealers in the past 10 days has resulted in a shift control module for $800+. No improvement. Now the prognosis is new trans @ $3600. I'm angry and perplexed. All said that fluid looks fine. I let out 8 oz of fluid from pan & it looks like chocolate milk & smells burned! Dealers & shops so far have said that they have seen very few Volvo transmissions fail.

I have seen some fail. Exactly the way you describe. My vote is a bad trans.
