Default What other steering wheels fit a '93 960?

Hello all,

I need to replace the steering wheel and airbag in my '93 960 wagon due to horn problems and a deteriorating airbag, so I'm wondering what would be a direct bolt-in, plug and play option. I've read that an 850 wheel would work. Can someone confirm this, and does anyone know if a V70 or even a later 960 would work? I think they changed to the two-stage airbag somewhere around '98 maybe? So I don't think that would be compatible with the earlier setup.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

pretty sure any 960 wheel will drop in and be an exact match. 940 interiors are different in enough ways that I wouldn't expect them to fit. IIRC, the 850/V70 uses a smaller diameter steering wheel

Pierce is right. 960's steering wheels of all years will fit. Nothing else. See here.

"Deteriorating airbag" -- I assume you are talking aesthetically.

I am just curious -- why wouldn't you buy the airbag and clockspring from a JY? That should run you $ 70-80 for both.

It sounds to me that Clockspring is bad. That should be simple and cheap to get.

The cover of the airbag is coming apart, and I'm not sure I trust the innards to work as intended in an accident. And now that the horn has started acting up, I thought it would be a good excuse to change everything out.

The local Pick-n-Pull sells airbags for $50 and wheels for $10, so I can get a matched set for $60 total. The problem is that they rarely have 960's, and if they do, they're always late models. But if a late model will bolt up and work, then that's the route I'll go. I think the late model steering wheels look better anyway.

Dan: About replacing the airbag, I would follow the procedures in the SRS section of the Manual (deactivating SRS, activating, handling airbags, disposal); I am sure you know about it.

Ah yes, I've read and re-read it about a hundred times. I have great respect for explosives.

Thanks for the reminder, though.

fwiw, the updated model 960 (1996 only?) is identical to the S90/V90 (1997, 1998)

now... I don't know for sure if the steering wheel is interchangeable between those updated cars and the earlier 960s from 1992 to 1995.
