Exclamation Blew the engine today.. Will s60 2.4 fit? Other ? inside.

Not really sure what happened, driving down the interstate this morning as usual, all of a sudden the check engine light came on and the car bogged down a little, I plugged in the OBDII reader and It had 6 codes- All were cyl misfire related. i checekd the guages and everything looked fine, I pulled off the interstate to check under the hood and the car was having trouble idling. I pulled into a gas station and the car died and poored smoke (blue= oil) out from under the hood, and when i popped the hood there was oil everywhere. At this point I called a tow truck and chalked it up to the fact that the car has 223,000 miles and something major failed... Time for a new engine.. I tried to start the car again for fun and it sounded slow to crank and wouldnt start.

Now to the questions- I found a lower mileage 2001 S60 2.4L engine, will this be a direct bolt in into the 1998 S70? I am a proficient "shade tree" mechanic, how involved is a pull and plop engine swap in these cars? any links or tips? (I have swapped engines in Rx7's, mustangs ect)

What the hell happened to my car?

Im a little depressed because the car had not shown any signs of failure and has had an oil change at the dealer as scheduled less then a week ago..

Im thinking that maybe the other day when the heater core blew, the head got warped or something... I cant think of how this could have happened.. I also can't find where the oil came from, there is no obvious point of exit... The car runs, just like crap.. I'm going to shop for a low mile drop in.

Any tips on what I need to look for in a replacement? (is the VIN # important? all the recyclers ask for my vin.)

The s60 motor is a no go.

They need the Vin to make sure they quote you on the proper motor.

Thanks, any ideas on what happened, or where the oil came from?

Also 2 more questions-

1) any links to engine removal how to?

2) should I even consider a turbo swap (any info on this)

Not sure about the smoke.

I do not have any links to a motor swap.

I just did one on Friday I removed the motor and left the tranny in there.

It was not that bad at all.

If you have it apart inspect the turbo then see if it is time for a new one.

On a '98 S70, you'll want the engine from either a '96-97 850 or a '98 S70. Like tech said, VINs matter, so double check with the salvage yard's interchange system. Anything newer is too different- mainly, nowhere to put the distributor, among other things that can't be remedied by a simple parts switch. As for the turbo swap... I'm assuming you mean you have an NA car, and you want to put in a Turbo engine? If so... there's re- wiring to be done, though not a whole lot, however, the transmissions are different., so probably not worth it. As for the actual engine change... an NA S70 isn't a big deal.

you know i was just talking to my boss the other day about doing a non-turbo automatic to turbo manual swap. as i have a 98 s70...i would be interested to hear if anyone has done this in the past and if the time & effort are worth it.
