5 speed swap - transmission selection
I'm ready to do my swap, but I need a flywheel. I found one, in a complete '98 S70. In all the threads I've read, I've seen reference to the difference between the '94/'95 transmissions and the '96/'97 transmissions, in terms of how the speedometer works. I've seen nothing about using a '98 transmission.
Obviously the clutch slave is different. Is there anything in particular that makes this transmission difficult or impossible to use? I already have a transmission, but I figure as long as I'm pulling this one to get to the flywheel, it would be nice to have it laying around the shop if it's useable. It's only $120.

what is year is the car that its going into? You may need to reverse the polarity of the crank sensor 93-95 have a slightly different flywheel then the later year ones as i recall

My car is a '95, and I already have a transmission from a '94. In the process of looking for a flywheel I checked car-part . com, and the list included flywheels from '93-'98. I therefore assumed that this '98 S70 flywheel will work.
As for the S70 trans, I wasn't sure, so thanks for the input. Isuppose I'll grab it for future use. I actually had the chance to drive the car that it's in, and know it shifts well. And for the price, I almost have to.
Thanks again

This project has taken an unexpected turn. I can't decide if fate is being kind or cruel.
So I found a 5 speed 850 in my local wrecking yard and grabbed the transmission with the intent of converting my daily driver. I didn't have the right socket to pull the flywheel, and when I went back for it the motor was gone. While I was looking for a flywheel, I found a turbo wagon on CL with a bad transmission. Cheap car with bad transmission, and a 5 speed in my garage...match made in heaven, so I bought the car.
A month later (2 weeks ago) my local wrecking yard got a '98 S70 5 speed. I grabbed that trans too because it was cheap, and I needed to get to the flywheel anyway. Three days after that I found a '98 V70 T5 on CL, also cheap, with a light hit in the front. It's black, and the S70 I got the transmission from is black. Another match made in heaven, so I bought that car too. Now I want to convert the V70 too, since I have access to the same model year car to grab parts from.
I'd managed to chop my collection of projects down to 5 (3 cars, 2 bikes), but every so often Craigslist does this to me. There really should be a 12 step program of some sort.
I'll probably do the 850 first, and just drive the V70 for a while. The S70 flywheel that I've got has notches. If I use that in the 850, would using the S70 sensor eliminate the need to swap wires? I prefer to avoid that if I can.
Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it.

Absolutely. I can use all the help I can get.
Currently I've got the 850 and V70 that are gonna be converted, a Diamante wagon that I pulled the single cam V-6/auto out of and put in a twin cam/5 speed into, a Eurovan with a cracked block that I'd really love to re-power with an 850 drivetrain, and my brother's escort that had a bad auto that was swapped for a 5 speed.
I've gotta get something finished and running...

Well, finally got the yeller to start, and drove it carefully around the parking lot. Got more odds&ends to put together, get it aligned again, and I think it's ready to run! My busy work schedule only leaves me with Sundays off, if that works for you we can meet up and compare notes.
Hey, that would be great. I'm occupied this Sunday, but next Sunday would work. I don't know where you'd want to meet that's in between Olympia and Bremerton. Let me know.
And if anybody else wants to join, a little impromptu gathering of locals is always cool.
