850 axle nut wich one
[:-]just installed generic new axle assembly in my 95 850 turbo wagon.the listing from autohausaz said some units require the larger 22mm nut.first, whats a unit, how do i know if i need a bigger nut and how can a 22mm nut take the place of the 20mm nut that came with the shaft.autohaus was no help at all.the nut i removed was much bigger then what they sent me but the new nut fits the new shaft please help i think im going nuts, cliff
Don't go nuts just yet
.
I believe 20 & 22mm refer to the inside diameter of the nuts, not the actual tool size. The OEM is a 36mm nut, and some models have re-usable nut, while other models, including mine, have non-reusable nut that has to be staked with a punch upon installation. Most on-line vendors sell the OEM nut alone for several bucks. Wait for more replies that can guide you better, as I've never replaced an axle.

[:-]i guess what i am trying to say is that the new nut fits the new axle just fine but it doesnt fill the space in the hub like the old 36mm nut did because the new nut has a much smaller diameter thanks for your reply .i hope somebody understands this it sounds nuts to me
Does teh washer on the nut cover the hole in the hub?
If so once tightened you should be fine.
The threads on the outer joint come in 2 different sizes.
But you will never know till you see the axle close up.

[&:]thanks for your help.i have to get the car on the road so i think i will put a hardened washer under the nut and hope for the best.the new nut does cover the hole but just barely hence the washer
