Default 850 key fob ... am i doing this right?

Hi,

Recently I decided to get a key fob as my volvo was sold to me without any.

I took a chance and picked up one of ebay. Its got 2 buttons, lock and unlock situated at the top.

However I cannot get the damb thing to work and I suspect i may have be sold a duff.

Ive done the following:

1. Made sure all doors and boot are locked
2. Turned the ignition on and of 5 times
3. The light towards the front of the dash flashes
4. Pressed the lock button.

I ve also tried without pressing the buttons, i have checked my doors are closed correctly etc..

Ive changed the batteries in the fob.

Is this a duff fob would you think? I was thinking about going to a dealer however last time i went to my local volvo dealer (due to what was actually faulty spark plugs) I ended up having a distibuter cap, exhaust manifault, idle air control and HT leads replacement and when I complained I was told to f**k of, so you can see why i prefer to do most of my own repairs! - Oh and in the UK, head office don't care just to stir things up.

Any help much appreciated

Not all of them work on all cars. The procedure you are using is correct, but make sure all electrical components are off when you do it. I have done it once on my 97, but have not had any luck doing the exact same procedure on the other two cars. Make sure you leave the ignition in the on position when you press the button and hold the button down for a little while.

Did you find out from the Dealer which part # remote goes to your car?
There is like 3 different remotes for these cars.

Strangedays,

When I bought my 96 850T this year it came with two remotes, one works the other doesn't. I've tried all the procedures with no luck either. If you ever find a list of which #s go with which car please pass it on. Should mine actually work for your car, I'd gladly switch with you. The buttons on the dud look brand new, so maybe it never worked, or was dropped very early in its life. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I have to replace my remote becuase I lost it somewhere (long story, but probably on the bottom of Lake Erie).Has anyone had expierience with the non Volvo brand? Minehad just the lock/unlock buttons and Volvo says the part number is 9148646. Volvo says its $130 to replace it, but several online places claim to have ones that will work for $50ish. Not sure if I shouldgo with nonvolvo or not
