850 stuck in winter mode
Hi,
I'm a newbie here, so please be patient with me. I searched this forum before posting. My 1994 non-turbo 850 automatic is stuck in winter mode. The up arrow is lit ( not flashing ). It starts up this way and never changes. There is no response from the mode switch ( W-E-S ) and no lights lit on that switch. Driving, if the shifter is set to 'D' it starts out in 3rd gear. I can force it into 2nd by moving the shifter. I've tried to cycle the shifter from P to L 20x a couple of times with no effect. I tried to get the error codes out following the instructions I found on the net with no success. I took the mode switch apart and cleaned the contacts with no effect. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks, Ken

RE: 850 stuck in winter mode
I would re-try retrieving fault codes from TCM (Transmission Control Module or ECU: Electronic Control Unit). See attached. Clearing possible codes may restore the original performance. Also, double check on ATF level.

RE: 850 stuck in winter mode
I have had this problem. On my 850 code 313 PNP switch gets set. Try a rachet cleaning of the PNP switch, then reset codes. Eventually you will end up replacing the PNP Switch. A rachet cleaning is really easy. With engine off squeeze the shift lever and move from park to L and back as fast as you can and untill your arm tires 20 to 30 times. Reset the code and try it again. Usually works for me. I did just replace the PNP switch at 243,000 miles. Check this link out if you want to replace it your self:
