Default 850 variable intake, not working.

I have non-turbo with auto, and the variable intake is not working! I beleive it has not worked since I bought the cara few months ago. I had to take care of other issues and now it is the variable intakes turn. I had the intake manifold off before and I did clean everything and checked the operation of the linkages and the control diaphram and it does function and holds vacuum. The control diaphramhas a vacuum line going to a electric solenoid (which I also tested electrically) that is attached to the air cleaner box! There is another vacuum line from the solenoidthat goes to the throttle body. I don't believe the solenoid is getting a signal to activate the solenoid to recieve vacuum to activate the diaphram. I cannot find any info of the operation or where the signal comes from to activate the variable intake. thanks in advance

Hello,

I didn't know there was a variable valve mechanism on 850, and cannot remember if Haynes mentioned it. In this case I'm not much of help, but other experts would be able to give you some solutions.

Sorry couldn't help you in this case.

It is not a variable valve, butintake. I am not sure what it is called, but there is a linkage attached to the underside of the intake manifold and there are flappers inside each intake runner, when there is vacuum applied to the diaphram which is attached to the linkage, it actuates theflappers. But I don't know when they are supposed to be actuated, I assume at a high rpm with a load?I know it is not on the Turbo models for some reason, only the non-turbos.Can't find info on Haynes or Mitchells.Any help greatly appreciated.

Sorry to revive such an ancient thread, but I was just looking into
this myself. There is a wonderful PDF posted at Matthewsvolvosite
discussing the design features of our engine. In particular, there are
3 pages of lucid discussion of the V-VIS (Volvo variable intake
system), complete with operating parameters, diagrams of the runners,
and plots of torque and intake pressures. I really enjoyed the whole
document, but you will be most interested in pages 9-11.

Take-home: "The shorter ducts are closed when the throttle is more than
80% open and with engine speed between 1500 and 4100 rpm. At smaller
throttle opening, or at other revs, the valves remain open and form part of the wall of the
short ducts in order to minimize flow losses."

The PDF is too large (1MB) to post here, but is available at
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/850...neTechInfo.pdf
I've attached to mmy previous post one of the relevant figures showing
a cross-section of the intake runners, and the action of the valve.

(I can only make very short posts, otherwise I get a server error. Though I guess it's a good way for a newbie to get his post count up.

I was dumb. I confused variable intake with variable valve timing......

You can apparently get the computer to test the V-VIS valve for you without the engine running (it's called the "Variable-flow intake manifold solenoid valve"). This is from the service documents posted over at http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/cha...pic.php?t=8018

In the document called 'tests with codes', on page 6 there are instructions for entering the self-diagnostic mode. Note these assume you have the underhood diagnostic boxes, which I think are only present up to 1995 (?)

ENTERING SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - IGNITION SYSTEM
NOTE: To perform diagnosis, turn ignition on. Ensure function
selector cable is in diagnostic unit "A", socket No. 6. See
Fig. 1.
[...]
Diagnostic Test Mode No. 3 (Control Testing)
Press test button 3 times to activate test mode No. 3. ECU
responds by activating components in following order:
* Cooling fan at half speed for 15 seconds.
* Cooling fan at full speed for 15 seconds (15-second pause).
* Variable-flow intake manifold solenoid valve for 2 Hz for 5
seconds (5-second pause).
* Speedometer for 5 seconds by generating a speed signal for
approximately 1500 RPM (5-second pause).
The sequence is repeated 3 times.
