Default 94 850 random stall pt 2

so, after fixing my volvo a month ago, she died this morning on my wife for no reason. no CEL, no service light, nothing.

the SRS light is on but i seriously doubt it had anything to do with it.

recently had the EGR valve cleaned, replaced the MAF, spark plugs and wires, cleaned out my air filter...

where should i look now?

wife said the car took around 5 minutes to start back up but eventually it did an she got home fine.

Did the car slowly sputter out, or did it just stop running?
Were the dash lights on when it died?
Did it only happen once?
When she tried starting it again, did it crank but not catch?
First thought is fuel filter or pump.

Check for codes, even though the CEL isn't lit. Some can appear.

For the SRS, check out this thread:
https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-850-16/reset-srs-light-15769/
look for the PDF attachment and within it, scroll down to the "RETRIEVING CODES" section.

my understanding is the car flat out died. she said it took her around 5 minutes of waiting/cranking before it turned back on. so far, its only happened once since the repair.

i will note that once also, i saw the console lights (all of them) briefly flicker while i was on the highway, but i attributed it to the cluster since the odometer broke. the electronic part of the cluster works though, just not the odometer.

yes, the car cranks fine and runs fine now. am going to check for CEL codes in a bit, im doing laundry ATM.

I've had a similar problem on a different car and it was the crank position sensor. Never set a code, either.

My symptoms were random stalls only when stopped and the wait to start the car was getting progressively longer. The car would crank and crank with no sign of turning over. Turns out there was a coolant leak and it would run into the sensor and corrode it.

thanks for the info. however, my wife said it stalled while she was driving and this is the first time its happened with no check engine conde. no coolant leaking either though i did have to top it off... needed like half a cup of coolant tops?

a new problem has arrisen!

im about 75% sure its the fuel pump now. my reasoning is this;

shes getting spark, tested all 5 cylinders. usually, when i turn the ignition on, i hear a WHIRRRRRRRR type noise for about 1.5 seconds. im fairly sure THATs the fuel pump, no?

either way, i dont hear that whirrrrr noise anymore. all she does is crank and crank, never catches.

question is, how hard is the fuel pump to replace? my repair manual is in storage with about half of my tools. i do have a complete socket set, a complete wrench set and multiple 'strange' tools.

id love to tackle this myself, seeing as ive seen fuel pumps taken out in a matter of minutes.

furthermore, WHERE do i access my fuel pump? this happened on my brick once, turns out my pump siezed. mechanic in the complex banged on the fuel tank, and lo and behold she started up.

These should help you figure out the pump swap:

It's between the rear passenger seat and the rear passenger wheel - you get to it from the inside.

ok, so i have some sort of clog maybe? when i took out the spark plugs and wires, i cleaned out everything i could. MAF sensor with maf cleaner, made sure there was no corrosion on spark plugs (just replaced em a month ago actually), checked the air filter and intake hoses, made sure all the vacume lines were connected.

lo and behold she starts up no problem. however...

i was blocks from my house and she died at the stop light. took about 3 minutes before she started catching then finally she starts up again.

bad relay? clogged fuel filter?

thoughts?

-edit-

spark plugs were clean, there was some oil from where i spilled some, but it didnt get into the spark plug chamber. i doubt this has anything to do with it but just throwin it out there.

also, no CEL codes, checked all the service ports and they all came up 1-1-1.

im about to inspect the relay here in a few. what are some things to look for that would indicate a bad relay?

so i checked out the fuel pump relay. its a dark green, in nice shape, no weird marks on it, plastics arent coming apart.

so what happens? A MO FARKIN BEE DECIDES TO TAKE A DUMP ON MY PARADE AND STING ME!

lil bastard, he met my sandle pretty quickly and left a nice pool of venom on my kneecap (where the bugger stung me)

I hear bleach is good right after being stung... Supposedly attacks the venom and reduces inflammation.

What is your fuel pressure? Maybe your pump or fuel pressure regulator is going... Might be a clogged fuel filter.

i dont have a gauge for the fuel pressure atm, its all in storage. i might go buy a cheap one and a fuel filter and give that a whirl.

i already ordered a replacement relay from FCP just to get that out of the way

alright. so i got 2 replacement relays at the junkyard. my relay is green. these are both red. one is a KAE red relay, part # 3.302.230 and it also has 25.05 on the side.

relay #2 is a volvo relay, part # 9434225 and underneath that it has 89 8797 000. underneath that it says fuel pump controller, and finally under that it says >PA6-GF30<

MY relay is green, part # 9434138 and 89 8769 000, fuel pump controller, >PA6-GF30<

so, im guessint the red volvo relay is compatible since the PA #s match and the numbers below that also match... both are:

.....15|......
..31B....31..
...|.......|...
.......87.....
.......__.....

and, now that i look, the red KAE relay also has the same configuration for those numbers, as in all 3 match at the very bottom. also, on the top of the KAE relay, >PA6-GF30< that number is present as well.

i got a warranty on em since it was only 2$ a piece and there were at least 20 850s out there. duno whats up with that...

tested both relays for about 2 hours a piece. no weird issues. also, with the KAE relay, a ticking noise i had (noisy injector) is now mostly gone.

both relays work great, time will tell now if its the fuel pump or relay going bad.
