Default 95 850 has trouble starting

My 95 850 can start without an issue over and over and than wont start. I hear a click and then a sound as if a spark was generated and failed. I would wait a few moments and then try again and then it usually starts.
Today I almost had to leave my car at work because it took about 2 dozen tries before it finally started. The battery is in good shape.
I was told it is more than likely the starter relay. I see it is on the starter motor. Can the soleniod be replaced by itself or is the starter and solenoid one unit?
Can anyone tell me how easy/difficult the soleniod and or starter is to replace?

I would buy a Bosch starter and swap it out. Its not to bad to replace.

Do you have to take off the intake manifold to swap it or can you just go right at it?

If the car is a turbo I reccomend removing the cooling fan.
If is is not turbo you can usually get right in there and remove it.

I have installed a rebuilt Bosch starter, hoping that would start up the car.
But it is still making the same kind of whining sound as with my old starter.

Did I install another bad starter or what else would cause that whining sound?
Any idea?

Thanks!

Same deal here. Car almost starts, and then a whirring sound. Sometimes just the whirring. When car comes close to starting, it backfires, and dies. Already replaces the cap-rotor, plugs, cam sensor. Car started once a few days ago, and ran good for half an hour; I put it in gear and stalled. Hasn't started since. (Also changed oil and filter...).

Default relay

hi there

VERIFY that the INJECTOR relay on top of the RAD
(to the right of the turbo intake hose--if you have one)
is functioning.

get someone to touch it with their fingers
while you try to start the car.
if they feel a click its probably ok
and soo look elsewhere for your problem
if no click...get a new one for around $40

I discoverd this while working on my car...
if that isnt plugged in or working order
my starter would WHRRRRRRRRR
but NOT engage...but as soon as I plugged it back in---wroooom
away she went.

lemme know
