Default 95 850 pvc system & spark plug ???

Hi , I'm new to Volvo's but bought a 95 850 non-turbo a couple of weeks ago. I don't think the PVC system is working after reading these threads, because my MPG's are around 22-23, and even though the oil has recently been changes it smells very much like gasoline. I cleaned the flame trap and sprayed out the thottle body. Then warmed the engine and at idle removed the hose from the top of the valve cover and there is no suction present, The Chilton manual says there should be. Is my oil seperator plugged? How hard is it to replace? must the intake manifold come off to get to it? I can't hardly see it from underneath the vehicle let alone get to it to work on it.??
Also I got all of the maintenance records with the vehicle it will need a tune-up in a couple thousand miles, It has the Volvo 3 pronged spark plugs in it, are there other brands of spark plugs that are suitable replacements, or should I get another set of the originals? Also should the plug wires, distributer cap and rotor be replaced as well the car is coming up on 120,000 miles. Also the Chilton manual says that the timing can't be adjusted, but these threads suggest otherwise, can someone give me the procedure, or is leaving it alone the best?

Thanks for the help

The Vent box may be clogged. Yes the intake needs to come off to replace.

I would suggest the Volvo plugs but that is just me.

Hello moderator,
Can you please lead me to a complete how to on the board about replacing the pcv system for a 94 850 volvo non turbo? I saw something with a lot of nice pictures but no writeup. I am unsure how to remove the fuel rail with the injectors. Thanks
Jim

Welcome to the forum, I wish you find it useful & helpful.

No, the ignition timing is controlled by the ECU and cannot be adjusted. However, some people seem to modify their engines to get more power out of them and in such case, reprogrammed ECU seems available, not sure if they come with different ignition timing. It is something I wouldn't do, as the factory setting gives me enough punch to merge into a 70 mph freeway with ease.

Good luck, you can't go wrong with Tech's advice.

Fyi, removing the intake manifold is easy, just time consuming. If you pick up a pcv kit from fpc grotten, it comes with all new connectors and gaskets to make the job go much easier.

I would suggest running a single prong spark plug. The engergy is going to find the quickest way to the strongest prong, effectively making the other two useless and drawing a weaker spark. I have had great luck with ngk plugs on many applications.
