95 850 Tranny Woes
Hats off to all you volvo mechanics,
sorry if I posted this previously in the wrong section of this forum.
I have a 95 850 non turbo, automatic trans, the problem I am encountering is it appears the tranny slips in and out of gear, One way I prevent this is to slighly put pressure on the gear selector **** when driving and wait until the tranny warms to temp, Every now and then the arrow on the dash will blink and the trans is in a limp mode until I reset it.
I have accomplished this by turning off the engine and turning on/off the ignition 5 times until the arrow becomes a solid light not"blinking".
I have read that this may be the gear position selector or gearselector microswitch, Can you aces help me out?

RE: 95 850 Tranny Woes
Hi Jess,
Welcome to the forum, and don't worry about posting a question in the wrong section as I usually move them to the right section. This time I couldn't find it just in time, as I'm on Japanese time zone at the moment.
The first place I would go is to check for trouble codes in the TCM (Transmission Control Module; computer that can store trouble codes in its self-diagnostic memory). I'll give you attachments FYR. The PNP switch is known to go bad rather often but I do not believe it contributes to the slipping problem. Check for codes, double check on the tranny fluid for colour & smell (it should be clear red and should not have burnt smell). Do you know how to check the transmission fluid level? It is not like checking for engine oil level; certain steps have to be followed to get the accurate reading. If low, just add enough Dexron-III/Mercon fluid. The problem may or may not be major. If it's not for faulty solenoid or incorrect fluid level/condition, however, the transmission might have served its life.
A steady arrow usually indicates the tranny is in winter mode. Double check on the mode selector position.
Or, you can simply visit a local auto parts store such as AutoZone and have them pull codes via OBD-II connection. Some parts shops provide free diagnostic services, and if your 850 has the OBD-II port, you can have it tested. Make sure to tell the store clerk that your 850 DOES have the OBD-II port, even though it's '95. They are taught that cars made after '96 are the only one they can hook up the scanner, which isn't true. See attached and remove the coin holder if so equipped to see if your 850 has the OBD-II port.
I'll let other experts give you different perspectives.
