Default 97 855 purchase?

Well I am trying to return to the volvo venue, I have been gone for a few years, sold my v70 after grad school, and miss it. I have been doing my rounds on CL, as well as many other sites, and I am now posting the dreaded "give me your opnion on this car on CL thread" At first glance, yes this car looks a bit clapped out. But Im drawn to the 5spd, and do my own work on my cars, so some repairs dont scare me. What has me scratching my head is the engine? I admit, I did do some research, but not a book report on this generation of volvos, was that an optional engine, or am I missing something. My guess is cut springs and the blacked ou tail lights ar a hack right off the bat. So hit me with your expertise, and I appologize in advance for the dreaded thread. CL link below.

I think these cars are very easy to take care of. I have two of them, both 5 speeds. Not wagons, but I wish they were.

My guess is, that engine picture is a different car. That's all I got.

That engine bay uses a prop rod, there is no prop rod on any 2, 7, 8, 70, 80, or 60 series.

I personally find black out lights and wheels untastefuly, but the interior looks pretty clean and it is a 5 spd, so I agree it's worth checking out.

Though, there is a chance it's still on it's factory clutch. Ask for proof of replacing it, if there isn't proof, assume the clutch has 248k on it.
I bought a T5 with 254k and the PO said the clutch was replaced, no it wasn't.

Easy to make mistakes with "picture file management". So moving right along, it's ugly, but it is a 5 speed wagon. I say buy it. Brief de-uglification project and you'll have a dandy driver.

the wheels are the standard 15" Cetus painted black. Easy to find replacements from any 94+ 850 or S/V70 if you want to go back to silver. Working struts and springs on the 850s is about as straight forward as it gets too.

For the blacked out lights all you need is patience, 2000 grit sandpaper and some plastic polish and a buffing wheel you can chuck up in a cordless drill.

It's a pain but you can bring them back if you don't want to spend $$ replacing them.
