97' N/A 850 losing a lot of oil
Hello -
My wife came home on Friday night and told me the car was smoking. I went outside and found that oil appears to be leaking near the back of the motor on the driver's side. I am really not sure what it is. I took a few pics, but it says my file is too large.
There is a stainless line in the area. Any thoughts or help would be great. It does not leak when the car is off, only under pressure.

Hello Mr. 850_Wagon,
Greetings from Chicagoland.
If the 850 is N/A, then it is not the turbo oil return line. I wonder what else was there.
Did you see the colour of smoke, or smelled it? Is it really the engine oil that is leaking? It could be transmission fluid, coolant, etc... But if it's the engine oil, there may be a failing O-ring or seals in oil lines, but at the moment I cannot recall oil lines in the back of the engine on driver's side, except for turbo models.
If you can somehow upload the pics, that would be the best. What format are the pics using? Usually jpegformat requiresless bytes.
Best wishes,
JPN

Hi JPN -
How's Chicago? I was there in January a few years ago on business. I came in a snowstorm and left in the snowstorm...
I can give you 2 definites. It is not a turbo and it is definitely engine oil. I checked the dipstick as well and was low. I added more since. I asked my friend who is a Chevy guy, but not much into the Volvos and did not know what area that was either. He was thinking something like it was a main oil line to the engine?? What is in the area.
The pics are JPGs and came off my camera with 946kb in size. I took a screenshot of the picture and seemed to work.
Thanks for your response.

That is your rear Cam seal.
Since it is a Non-turbo car make sure the Flame trap isn't clogged.
Also look under the cap and see if it is leaking there as well.

The flame trap is in the unduction hose just before the throttle body. There is a black housing that holds the flame trap. It has 2 hoses going to it.
1st make sure the hoses aren't clogged mainly the small one.
Next remove the housing and make sure the insert isn't clogged.

Ok - I took a quick look before where is the flame trap in the picture and if I take it apart will oil come out? It might sound stupid, but I would rather ask then screw it up.
