It is an 850 auto estate GLT 93/94 model. I am assuming this is an American site by your terminology of 'under hood'?! I was advised of this being a 'common fault with his model' by a Volvo specialist garage that has been in business for over 40 years and who I was a customer for 25 years! Perhaps our vehicles are a slightly different spec than for the American market?

Being a 93-94 it will be OBD I.
The diagnostic unit is under the bonnet near the windscreen washer fill point.
Ignition off.
Remove the covers. Place the probe (wire with a bullet terminal on it) into socket B5.
Ignition to on, but don't start the car.
Press the button once next to the red LED.
LED will flash a three digit code. EG code 1-2-2 will be one flash, pause, two flashes, pause, two flashes.
Write the code down, then push the button once again to read any remaining codes. If it flashes the first code again that is all the codes there are.
Post up here or search for the code displayed and we can help narrow down what the error is.

You can save some money if you read your own codes. You could also try to reset it. If it's a hard fault it will just pop back on but if it was something intermittent you might get lucky and the light will stay off.
Snag a copy of the factory service manual from here:
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/downlo ... vo_850.zip
Once you unzip it see the file named air bag restrain system.pdf.
It will walk you through the procedure to test and reset the system, if you get any error codes it will also walk you through test procedures.
Don't use an Ohmmeter to try to test any of the airbags as it can actually trigger them.
Post your codes and we go from there.

see pg 20, 21.
After MY 95, then it's a trip to the dealer and BO..

To all who have replied to my present dilemma A very big THANK YOU! Unfortunately before I received this message car refused to start, [believe it to be the starter sensor relay as she turns over and the battery is healthy] So the garage was summoned and she is awaiting collection! I will however pass your comments on to the mechanical engineer, again many thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.
