Alternator pulley....again
Getting ready to do the alternator this weekend. My new alternator did not come with a pulley, so I need to take the one off my existing unit.
It has a plastic cover on it. I took that off and I see some weird spline thing.
Any ideas how I am suppose to get that off?
Here is a pic taken with a mirror.

Is the car an 850 That looks like the newer style decoupling alternator systems.
I'm not sure what you're looking at there.
All the Bosch 100 amp alternators normally found on 850s have a straight smooth shaft with one big nut on the end. If you purchase it on line or used you can usually take it to an auto parts store and they have an electric impact they can use to transfer it over for you. They have to do it to the ones they sell so they have the equipment on hand to transfer the pulley. If it's a decoupler, I don't know. Some use special tools.

IF it wasn't Canadian I would say it's the wrong alternator but there is a chance something changed like the way "you guys" have manual transmission, turbos when we we are stuck with only automatics
When I say could be wrong, that doesn't indicate it's a bad idea. That newer alternator style drive is easier on the engine, alternator, serp belt and belt drive pulleys so it's a good thing and if you can would be nice to retain.
Can you get that mirror into a position to read the numbers off the alternator and post them ??
Maybe call a dealer, IPD or FCP and ask ??

Well live and learn. I was going off what I've seen but what you have might be "With revcounter coupling."
I hadn't come across this before and all the ones I've done were the standard style that were direct drive. I hadn't even seen this option listed or mentioned before . Soooooo, apparently Volvo did start to put those on 850s. Now the question of how you transfer that over or if you need to get one with that coupler already attached. I'm pretty sure the alternators shaft is different from one style to the other. That and it's only 80 amps compared to 100 for the direct drive.

Were you going with new, reman or used ??
You might want to check on how long and how much $$ it would be to have a local re-builder overhaul yours.

Sorry for the multiple posts but still lookin' around on this one. Took the Valeo part number and crossed it over on NAPAs web site. Comes up with a standard direct drive looking, 80 amp alternator.
NAPA AUTO PARTS
From the look of that nut being that far into the pulley I'm assuming it's direct drive. If that's the case and you don't get the decoupler I'd sure opt for the 100 amp !!
I checked a number of U.S. parts suppliers and FCP and none are showing that decoupler equipped alternator. Except for rockauto, they are all showing the 100 amp Bosch as the replacement and you need to transfer over your stock pulley as they come "bare". That would be a problem for you as the pulley you have likely isn't going to fit on the 100 amp shaft.

The part number on my current volvo is 9162683. I am pretty sure the shaft will accept a direct or clutched pulley.
I have ordered the removal tool here:
Just hope it all works out.
