I recently bought a volvo 850 GLT '97 and noticed the rear ashtray bulb was dead. I installed a new one and it works but it's always on when the car is on. Is that how it should be?

when you say stays on, do you mean when the key is on or when the car is off as well? do you use your headlights as daytime running lights?

 

Only when the key is on. The bulb in the front ashtray is also dead so I can't see how that one works. The headlights are always on - due to swedish law.

 

seems to me its tied into the interior/dash lighting and is lit because your headlight switch is in the on position. My 850 is away at school so I can't check to see if there is a micro-switch that toggles when the ashtray is open or closed. Simple fix is to put in the bad bulb again or leave as is.

 

That is exactly what it is, thanks! Turning the lights off turn the ashtray bulb off. I don't mind having it on always, it was just the not knowing how it worked. Anyway thanks again!
