Default Automatic shift lock system

I have another problem with my newly aquired 850, the automatic transmission shifter lock system is not working. I assume that a properly working system wil not let you move the shifter out of park unless the brake is pressed.

on my car the only way I can shift out of park I have to press the shift lock override button next to the shifter(which is a pain in te ***)
I am not really concerned if i get the system working properly or not, if removing whatever locks the shifter is an easier alternative to eliminating this problem I'm sure that is waht I'm going to do.

is there an "esay fix" or way to check what is going wrong, could it be somethinh as simple as a switch on the brake pedal or something?
thanks
-Mike

When you have the shift lock problem, is anything else affected such as the headlights or tachometer?

You have to replace the shift lock switch in the console. I'm sure you can search and find instructions on how to do it. It's a pain to do but not that hard and relatively inexpensive. They go bad frequently. Make sure you get it in just right. I had trouble seeing what I was doing, other than that it was easy.

I checkerd in to it today and figured out the problem. It was a lot easier once i removed the console fully which after a crack i figured out how to remove!

well the syseem works like this, there is a switch on the brake pedal assy that sends 12V to the shift loch mechanism. There is a small solenoid and a N/O micro switch that is wired in series with the supply power and solenoid. The purpos of that switch is to prevent the solenoid from energizing every time the the brake is pressed when the shifter is not in park.

I figured out the proplem with mine, I am getting the 12V power suply when the brake is pressed, the micro switch is working ok but I do not have any continuity through the solenoid coil, so that's my problem. AAll I did to eliminate the problem was to remove the solenoid itself and that is what actually locks the shifter. Now i can shift the shifter out of park at any time, in the 48 hours that i've owned this car man was it ever annoying using the shift lock bypass button haha

I would say this procedure is on the easy side of things, it takes longer to remove the console than to remove the shift lock solenoid!
