Default Axle Nut dilema

Replacing driver side Axle, and new axle came with smaller size Axle Nut.
Should I use old 36mm nut or this new smaller size (not sure, maybe 30mm). Thanks for any input

Since already paid almost $20 for 36 mm socket I am going to use 36 mm nut. This 30 mm nut look to little for the job.
Any input is welcomed.

If they are both the same thread and will both fit properly I'd pick the one that looks stronger and remember to torque it down. Setting it to the proper torque setting will give you the best life from the wheel bearing (hub assembly) it's sitting in.

You can also get those sockets at a local auto parts store on "loan". Basically you buy it to take it out of the store and get a refund when you return it. Most of the parts stores have a list of tools they loan out. I know Oreilly and Autozone do. It's in their best interest to help you have the tools you need to get the job done so you buy their part. BUT .... even if you get the part someplace else, IPD, NAPA, Rockauto you can still get their tool on loan to do the job!

Thanks,
I bought socket at Autozone and still have plastic insert with price tag but I am going to keep it as reminder of how great job I have done. LOL

When i got my new axle it also came with a smaller, 32mm axle nut. I used the new one on the basis that my 36mm nut was 14 years old.

I believe this is what you are talking about. I had to decide too. Chose the OEM.

AND ... I forgot to mention to NOT use an impact. Break the big nut loose while still on the ground. If you impact it you run the risk of transmitting that impact shock down the axle and into the transmission where you are beating a gear against the parking pawl.
