Blower motor

Blower motor
Hi all. I have a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo Sedan and the heater/AC blower motor is working only intermittently when I start the car. Even when it is working it makes a chugging, wheezing noise. Does this sound like the blower motor needs replacing? Does one have to replace the resistor at the same time? Can anyone suggest where I can find the part(s), preferably used and instructions for replacing? Thank you!

RE: Blower motor
The resistor is probably about to retire. If you have ACC (automatic climate control), you can check for possible fault codes. Listen to other members as well, as I was out of the forum for nearly 4 months and am in the process of rehab.
I would not recommend getting a used blower as you may experience the same problem. A new blower is indeed expensive (OEM German Behr) but that is what I would install.

Some people have successfully cleaned & lubed noisy blower. Try it to see if it cures before spending a hefty dough of $.
Good luck,

2nd half. Never mind the sections I circled in red; they were used for someone else.

RE: Blower motor
Thanks for the quick and complete response! I checked the diagnostic fault codes and the only one I got back was 3-2-1 (Driver's side damper motor active too long). Any idea what that means and is it relevant to my problem? Also, is there anywhere online anyone can point me to with instructions for replacing blower and resistor?

RE: Blower motor
Do a search for blower motor replacment here on the forum and you should find it. Briefly though, you need to take off the lower trim padding beneath the glove box, remove the metal brace/pate, remove the glove box, and in the glovebox cavity mounted by the firewall is the blower motor unit. If I remember right it has 2 or 3 connectors going to it. No special tools needed except for some hex tips for the mounting screws. The whole thing takes about 30 minutes or so to take apart.

RE: Blower motor
Haynes is sufficient for his procedure as well as other routine to mid-level servicing:
