Default Broken Odometer - Any way to read actual mileage?

Hi! Newbie here.

My husband and I just bought a 1996 850 wagon. The odometer is broken. We have the replacement gear and instructions. But is there any way to read the mileage? Everyone I've talked to so far says no, but I thought I'd check here just in case. (The flywire reading doesn't work b/c it's a 96 with the OBD-II computer.)

Thanks!

Most shops or stealership with the right OBD-2 Scanner can scan the mileage out of the ecu.

That's what I thought, but so far my (non-Volvo) mechanic and two dealers have said no, that it doesn't store mileage on the ECU. Maybe I'll keep asking...

The mileage is stored in the inst. cluster(Drivers information module)
If it is a Volvo Dealer they do not know anything. It can be pulled out of all the 850's from 94 to 97 cars.

This may/may not work but here it is (you need OBD-II to OBD-I converter, which has to be fabricated by yourself unless they are commercially available, and I don't know which pin is for reading the mileage):

Quote from MVS:
As long as you have the DTC boxes up under the hood ('93-'95).

1. Switch ignition on

2. Connect the fly wire to socket - A7

3. Push button 5 times

4. When LED comes on and stays on, enter code 1-1-1 as follows:
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- read off response, which will be the last three digits of the odometer miles

5. Repeat steps #3-4, but enter code
1-1-2 (that is, press the button twice on the last step); read off the response, which will be the first three digits of the odometer miles. If you have less than 100,000 miles, the first digit will read as 10 blinks.

See attached.

That only works in the 94/95 cars. In 96 they're only OBD II, no more OBD I.

Thanks for the advice, looks like I have some more work to do. I'll report back if we can get the reading.

Wait, you're saying the mileage is stored in the instrument cluster in the dashboard? How do I find someone who can read it? Just keep calling around? Or is it something that any mechanic has the equipment for if he knew where to look? Thanks again.

BTW, replaced the gear with instructions from http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/odometer_fix.php and it works perfectly.

That is why I have attached OBD-II to OBD-I converters as attachments.

They have to have the proper scanner to get it. I wish you were close to where I work we can do it.

I know this is old but it is precisely the information I need. Just bought a 96 850 turbo wagon with 129000 indicated miles and an odometer that died over four years ago.

Right now the battery is dead, it measures nine volts. I have pulled some codes with vol-fcr but have had no real luck with doing the mileage trick here.

When I do the one second press, it responds with 1-1-1, 1-1-1 so it seems to be working. The five quick presses don't work, I get nothing.

Am I doing anything wrong?
