Default Building my sons first caR [855R]

I'm doing it, and I have natural paternal concerns. He is a sensible kid, a skilled pilot - & my GT6 nemesis. I do want him to enjoy the journey. Besides, I'm riding shotgun! Before we do ANY power mods, I want to know she is sorted physically. So, a cupla questions for y'all.

* Coilovers or IPD progressives? Brands? It needs to ride as well as possible on the BBS 215/40/18s. I do have Volans if needed.

* Cross drilled discs. Good bang for buck when combined with ceramic pads in OEM brakes? Or should I really drop some $$ down & fit Wilwood? He IS my only son!

* Breathing. Any way of increasing flow to the existing box, and let a hi-flo panel filter do it's thing? I'm not afraid to cut the hood, for either intake or heat exhaust, & fit decent venting. Also, what's the ideal exhaust size (& setup) for a deeper rumble without any drone?

In a cupla months, once he has some miles in the seat, we will look to Lucky to design a torque punch setup. Low to midrange *****.

Thoughts, ideas, comments, leave 'em here please!

-There are more options than what you listed. Each has benefits. IPD has been known for being a stiff ride. Coilovers have more adjustment. I dont think I am going to be able to steer you on one direction. Have you considered H&R coils with Koni Fsd? Thats probably your nicest ride.

-Front brakes are small and do not stop well. Anything you want to do to improve them is good. Cross drilled discs dissipate heat more quickly. Small rotors heat up faster than large so it depends on what you decide to go with. Full on race cars have huge cross drilled discs...I think that tells you something.

- The OEM box breaths just fine. You dont need to make any changes until you change that turbo.
- Deep rumble but no drone? Um, its give and take. Best bang for your buck is the OBX system. Its throaty and drones. The way to get rid of drone is to slow the exhaust down, sort of hard to do when you trying to speed it up. Try a DynomaxVT.

a few thoughts - you can fit caliper mounts (from V/S70s?) that allow the larger discs from the newer model to fit on the 850 (I assume you have no plans of running 15 inch rims again). The idea of cross drilled/slotted rotors is to vent the hot gas that happens when the pads heat up during hard stops. For street apps, what I've read slotted rotors wear better than cross drilled. As to the choice of pads, ceramics resist heat better throw less dust and don't cost a premium etc. For the suspension, the best bang for the buck is to install the IPD heavy duty sway bars and end links (HD end links are a must - the 25mm bars will wear out the OEMs in short order). If you go with lowering springs, you may want to consider camber bolts as geometry will be key to handling/tire wear. For intake, a K+N filter in the box is all you need - just don't over-oil or you'll be washing your MAF. The key to improving airflow will be via a bigger downpipe and free flow CAT. If you go with a bigger turbo at some point, the big downpipe (ie 3") will be highly recommended.

Thanks guys. I think it already has the bigger brakes of the V70, being an R? I'm not certain, haven't measured them, but I remember reading one of the R upgrades was 302mm brakes. I'll be sure to check junkyards for clean V70 bits tho. I've decided springs/ shocks are indeed preferential to coilovers, and will get prices from everyone, see what offers exist. H&R/Koni certainly sounds like a worthy option. Replacement exhaust was always going to happen, & I'll certainly have a look at local availability of the DynomaxVT - not only for this car, my XJ8 Jaguar would benefit too. Thanks for the info!
