Bypass the air conditioning compressor - correct belt sizes
Hi, all.
I hope this helps someone out there.
I had an issue the other day with the air conditioning compressor seizing up. It made a terrible noise, and it got worse when I switched on the AC. Although it does get hot where I live, I'm just not going to pay for a new compressor and it doesn't look like fun to install.
I opened the Haynes manual to the part about the drive belt and saw that A/C was an option so I thought it would be a simple thing to call around and get the part number for the A/C-less belt size and pick it up. Unfortunately, everyone had only one belt size. Perhaps A/C is standard in the USA.
I found someone's post where they said to get a 47.5 inch belt, but that wasn't nearly long enough if it was routed correctly (according to the drawing in the manual). I then tried a 50 1/8" belt, which fit OK but might be a little too loose if it wore out a bit (judging from the auto-tensioner's travel distance). This 50 1/8" belt was part number 060495
The belt that fit the next size down is a 49 1/2 inch belt. It was part number 060490. The belt was such a tight fit that we had to pull the ignition coil lead and crank the engine over a bit (like getting a bicycle chain on) to get it to go over the last pulley. This worked fine and it was a good fit.
So no air conditioning, but hey.
