Default canister vacuum leak

Help me fix my sick 1994 850 turbo wagon. Two weeks ago i noticed a vacuum leak and traced it down to a canister in the drivers side fender. After looking at the canister it was leaking from a hose barb on top of the can and it had a plastic clip on it (indicating it was not intended for a hose). I plugged the port and all seemed fine but latley i have noticed that rotten egg smell and gas mileage is down to 16ish. anyone have a idea why that canister was leaking? HELP!!

The canister is supposed to have hoses on it.

Speaking from general knowledge, the engine might havebeen fed with too much raw fuel and it may have killed the catalytic converter. A faulty CAT can reduce gas mileage by creating back pressure. And a faulty CAT is generally noticed either by rotten egg smell (actually I never smelled a rotten egg before) or rattling in the CAT itself. Does your engine rev up smoothly? Any sluggish accelerations?

Charcoal canister can get soaked/saturated if conditions are met, in which case some makes recommend replacement. It's there to absorb vapourised fuel from the fuel tank, and when the engine is in operation the absorbed fuel gets sucked out of it with vacuum from the engine. As Tech has noted, check all connections to it and see if it improves. If not, is your CEL on?
