Default Charcoal Canister

Here's one for you all...

Just did my first oil change on my 1997 850 R since buying it and flushed the tranny while I was at it. The ATF was nasty brown/black with 86,000 on the clock. All went well and she seems to shift smoother now, so I am satisfied.

Now, while I was under the car I noticed the front of my plastic splash guard was not on quite right so I pulled it down to fit it up properly. When I went to bolt the second side back up I found a small hose hanging free. Looking a little bit more, I found a second one. From the routing of the hoses,I figured they must be for the charcoal canister. Only problem is, when I looked up in the fender the charcoal canister wasn't there! Now, my car passed the emissions testing in Ohio and has not thrown a CEL since I got it. I know the CELworks since itlights inthe first key switch setting. Shouldn't the lack of a canister and disconnected hoses throw a CEL? The car runs perfectly fine as is, so I'm wondering if I should geta canister and hook it up or just leave well enough alone.

Any thoughts?

On the 1997 I think that one should be under the back of the car.
I think it was only the early years. Follow the hose all the way up to the motor and see if it connects to the evap valve mounted on the cooling fan. Then the other one should run all the way back to the tank. Then there still might be a Bog hose way up in the fender.

If you have all 3 of the hoses and they run to where they are supposed to be then yes I would get one and install it.

The bracket and the zip tie are there for the canister, andit's mounted under the left front fender on my son's 97 GLT, so I'm pretty sure that's where it should be. One hose did indeed go to the valve on the evap valve and the other routed back towards the tank. The strange this is that the local shop accidentally left these all disconnected on my son'scar when they did the RMS and it set off the CEL, so why doesn't it do it on mine when it's all disconnected and the canister is gone?

Guess I need to did around for the Bog hose and check out canisters on Groton and other places.
