I'm guessing he was talking about head bolts as a "normal" engine, average build studs would be a bit overkill, around $249.00 overkill.
For his engine from the specs he has he likely has studs. They are stronger, re-useable (safely) and better at actually achieving the correct clamping torque. Just because the torque wrench says "X" doesn't guarantee the gasket is seeing that.
Studs are also handy if you know you're going to be in there often as in a racing engine.
