Loosen the axle nuts with the car on the ground. Put the car on jack stands. You have to pull the lower ball joints out of the spindle, then the axle ends will come out of the spindles. Once they are out of the spindles a large screwdriver/pry bar pops the axles out of the transmission. Oh, on the right side you need to remove the axle bearing retainer from the engine. It is actually explained real well in my Haynes manual, with pics.
