Default CV joints?

On my '96 850 GLT (260K miles) there is a horrendous metal on metal sound coming from the drivers side wheel area. Almost sounds like totally worn out brake pads scraping on the rotor, but the pads and rotors are new. The suspect noise happens during deceleration or braking but will cease if I re-accelerate. The noise is also not constant but occurs in a repeat pattern as if a warped rotor was scraping a pad. Again, Rotors and pads are new last week as an effort to solve the problem, obviously to no avail.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Has any work been done in that area lately?

None other than replacing the rotors and and brake pads, but it was exhibiting the problem before that was done.

No Boot looks ok, but I'm pretty sure about 2 years ago it was torn and my local Volvo Guy replaced the boot. Noticed it one day while under the car, not sure how long it was like that prior to fixing.

possible the joint is bad. Maybe jack it up and spin the wheel and see if you can hear/see anything.

Also, lift the front end (make sure to apply parking brakes fully and chock the rear wheels) and see if visual inspection reveals something. If you only have the scissors jack that is in the car, remove the wheels but do not get under the car/inside the wheel well as the car could accidentally fall on you.

I will re-jack the car and inspect. I don't recall anything unusual when I did the Rotors, but wasn't looking all that hard. Could a "sticky" piston on the brake caliper not allowing full engagement of the brake pad cause a similar noise?

I do not believe a sticky piston could make that kind of noise.

I would inspect all brake & suspension components in that area for signs of metal-to-metal contact. I have a feeling that something is loose there. If you can do so safely, try grabbing each brake & suspension component and try shaking them.

Any chance of the brake hose not being clamped down and dragging? Hmmm..cant remember since its been a while since i replaced pads, upper strut mount, etc but is there an ABS sensor there that might be out of place?

Also, cant remember but is there a pad clip that could be broken or fatiqued? I had that problem on the rear and just overlooked it at first...put a new clip on and no more noise.
