Lightbulb Dual Rear Fog Lamp Mod

This is really easy to do and only requires maybe 15 minutes of time and an 1156 bulb. Besides looking cooler, like the Audi's with dual rears; this mod allows you to quickly replace burnt out brake lamp bulbs with the rear fog lamp bulbs until a replacement can be purchased. All images are clickable thumbnails.

Cut out the plastic bar blocking the hole. I used wire cutters.

Bar cut out and mildly filed down. You might want to file it more as I only did it until the bulb barely cleared.

Put a standard 1156 brake light/stop lamp bulb in this spot. Plugs in perfectly.

Daytime shot.

Nighttime shot.

The reason Volvo made the rear fog only 1 light was for safety reasons. If you have both sides lit it can be confused for brake lights.

I call the rear fog lamp my "follow me" light when I have someone following me who is unfamiliar with our destination. I don't know why you would want it to look like you have your brakes on all the time.

I suppose in Washington, fog may be a larger problem. :P

One of the first "upgrades" I did.

We rarely get fog here (maybe once every 4-5 years) so I have re-wired both fog lights to be brake lights instead.

I did that a long time ago. I guess I would rather have drivers see me and think I'm slowing down than not see me at all. Regardless, still illegal.

I only use them in true low visibility conditions or (rarely) when I can't see the headlights of the car behind me because they are tailgating incredibly close (I know this usage is very likely illegal, but so is following that closely). I'm not one of those people who think that fog lights (front or rear) on as "DRL's" is cool. When you can barely see running/tail lights of cars in front on the freeway due to heavy rain and road mist I flip them on for safety. I don't quite see how it is illegal, under low-vis conditions, when Audi's have dual rear fog lights. Most Audi drivers also have no concept of a two-click fog light switch and have rears on all the time. With just the one fog light my friend's would always tell me I have a brake light out... They will go back to single for a short while if I have another brake light burn out.

I had a cop ask me the same thing once, and since I prefer to avoid any interaction with the cops, I'd also rather have both sides on.

When I got my first 960 is the first time I had rear fogs. I also wanted both sides on. I have run into fog a couple of times that made me use them, usually during traveling. Man the fog was so thick that I really wanted to pull over but was afraid that someone would run into me so I kept going, hoping no one would stop in front of me.

It's nice to be safe and seen but in some states it is illegal so you need to make a choice before you do it.

Several people have mentioned that it's illegal. What exactly is the illegal part? As others have mentioned, there are other vehicles that come from the factory with dual rear fog lights.
