Default Engine dying

While driving along, the engine just dies.....and won't start right away, but will in about a minute or so, usually with no problem again for days, weeks, or a month.
Recently this happened 3 times in one day. Mechanic recently replaced the battery, and did a tune up, but problem hasn't disappeared.
The car is getting great spark, indicating we have a computer or sensor problem, not fuel?

Not much of a car guy, but I've neglected to get some of my breather system hoses replaced as was suggested awhile back by the dealership. Could this have anything to do with my problem? I think it's electronic, not fuel related.

thanks all,

MO

Welcome to the forum, I hope you find it helpful.

I have a few questions on your mechanic:

1. Is he/she a fully-certified ASE?
2. Does he/she specialise in Swedish/European makes?
3. Is his/her shop up-to-date with electronic control systems (engine, tranny, brakes, etc...)?

I just wanted to make sure, as he/she does not seem knowledgeable on Volvos. I don't want to put other professionals down, but many have not kept up with electronic control systems. I would avoid average town shops or any of the franchise places for servicing a Volvo.

Recently, many people are having problem with the fuel pump or the pump relay. If not for the pump/relay, I would pull trouble codes from the engine ECU. If your 850 is '93-'95 model, you can do this by yourself, without a tester. If '96-'97, visit an auto parts shop that provides free diagnostic service via OBD-II, such as AutoZoneand have them pull codes on their scanner.

I hope this gets you started. Let us know how it goes. In the meantime, hear others' opinions too, as there are many experts in the 850 forum.

Default RE: Engine dying

thanks JPN, i have moved a few times so the service has been hit and miss, and worth a few stories one day, at my expense of course!

Asked about the breather system only because it was suggested I need to get this fixed. ALSO, I have looked up these parts for replacement, but not found them, any suggestions on a good parts site for 850's.?

Thanks again,
MSP

Hi MSP,

Here are the two on-line vendors that many of us are happy with; I myself have not used eEuroparts but have been very happy with FCP Groton.

FCP Groton:
Non-turbo: http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo850oiltrap.htm
Turbo: http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo850oiltrapturbo.htm

eEuroparts:
http://www.eeuroparts.com/home.aspx

When you place an order, be sure to tell them the exact specs of your car; turbo or non-turbo, model year & VIN# if asked. There has been a confusion as to which part # applies to which model.

Also, you will need a new intake manifold gasket too, as you'll have to disconnect it in order to gain access to the PCV system. The PCV system on 850s is much different from conventional PCV-valve system; there is no PCV valve on 850.

I'll list a post in case if you need to know what are involved in tune-up:

I hope this helps. Let us know if you need further guidance.

Happy holidays,

JPN

P.S: I work for an airline that has the HQ at MSP.
