If your muffler/exhaust line is clogged, you would notice decreased power. I believe there is a gasket at every pipe connection. Sometimes a mechanic forgets to remove the old gasket as it is crushed and somehow blends into the background...

If you put a new clamp on old pipes, there may be gap enough to allow exhaust gas/noise to escape. Use exhaust cement to fill the gaps between the clamp and the pipes.

The joint between the converter and the muffler should be a bell joint. The mufflers is flared out and the end of the converter is like a ball. There is a special clamp that's used to join them.

That type of joint never uses a gasket. Both parts are round and should make a nice tight fit. Possibly one end or the other has been damaged and now isn't perfectly round or smooth and can't make a proper fit.
You might try using an exhaust cement or sealant to help out. That or remove the part that looks worse and see if a muffler shop can reshape it.

You might have parts that are bent or deformed. You would either have to take it in and have a shop do some cutting and welding or cut that joint off yourself if you can get a sleeve the right size and clamp it in place of the joint.
The less expensive ones have a fixed diameter. There are some that are slightly adjustable and in the case of Volvo it might be necessary to use one of those.

So I had to remove the exhaust to change the rear tyre again, but this time I had to grind off the clamp attached to the can itself as it has corroded and my ratchet made mince meat of the torx bolt head.

Couple of questions really for anyone who does this often:

1. Does anyone take precautions with potential corrosion on the clamps with any kind of product?

2. When adding new clamps, or just using the existing, does anyone add any grease or sealant?

I bought a clamp from the local Honda dealership - I actually prefer it as the hex style bolt seems more robust than the torx style (I bought two matching Norma hex style clamps from eBay, arriving soon for a matching pair).

Problem is, I tightened to 24nm but I seem to be getting a leak from the clamps. It should be noted I replaced the butterfly valve with a Unit Garage eliminator adapter, but it seemed a snug fit.

I can tell there's a leak cos when I put my hand in front of the clamped part, I can feel air pushing out.

Any idea what the guys at the dealership might use when tightening the clamps?
