front brake line replacement
My wife's '96 GLC failed inspection; mechanic said both front brake lines were badly cracked. Those are metal, right? I know they're about $20 a piece, can I do them with the wheels on and car up on ramps? Or do I have to remove the wheels and put the f/e on jack stands?
I'm learning as I go and this is new to me. What kind of job is it? Any help appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

since it is new to you, i suggest you let a mechanic help you. it is better that you watch while he's working on it, so you'll know how the next time you got to fix it. car wheels are one of the subtle part of the vehicle so you have to be cautious with it somehow...
You would have to remove the wheels.
Then after you replaced them you would have to bleed the brakes.
There is rubber lines by the calipers. I will bet that is what he was talking about.

The mechanic is speaking of the rubber hoses that run to each caliper. The repair is simple enough if you do not round off the fittings on the metal lines. The wheels must be removed. You will then need to bleed each caliper. That auto uses DOT 4 brake fluid.....do not confuse that with DOT 3 that is most commonly sold. You would be well served to bleed the rear brakes also. With that in mind, I'll bet that you should take the auto to a certified garage as I question that you will be able to do the job since you ask if the wheels should be removed. I'm not "knocking" your ability but the safety issue should not be ignored.

That's the best thing Marty. If you are able, watch the mechanic change the hoses and you will see what is necessary should you perform that job on another vehicle. I would strongly suggest that the rear rotors/brake lines be flushed when the front's are done. Lastly, make sure that the mechanic uses DOT 4 fluid and not DOT 3!
