Default Fuel Leak

Hi, I'm new to the forum. Hope someone can offer some advice. I have a 96 850 with a fuel leak. The best I can tell it is leaking from the connection between the filler neck and the tank when the tank is full. I have not taken it apart yet, but it looks like there is a seal inside the coupling. Does anyone know what is involved with replacing/repairing the connection. While I am at it, my fuel quantity gauge reads low. Does anyone know how to test the sending unit? Is there a specific resistance that can be read across the sending unit when the tank is full? I don't want to replace it until I verify it is the bad component. Anyway, any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt it is the filler neck.
Fold down the rear passenger side seat and lift up the plastic panels. You will see a metal cover with 10MM screws remove it and inspect the hoses. There is a pretty big hose that is common to leak. The hose cracks then leaks when full.
Also check it above the filler tube. Sometimes it cracks just above the filler tube.

Not to sure about the specs for the sending unit.

There is a hose on my car that is leaking also. The hose is called a "Vent Hose". It is 15 dollars at the dealer, but don't let the price trick you into thinking it's cheap because the two hose clamps are 5 bucks a piece....

There is an easy solution which is to keep your tank under 14 gallons. I hope this helps.

Go check your car for this, and if you have it, the vent hose is your problem..

O.K., thanks; I will check the vent tube tomorrow. I have checked for leaks under both the metal plates already, but the tank was not quit full at the time. I found the leak after I topped it off, but I didn't recheck under the plates after that. I will recheck tomorrow. Thanks for the info.

^If you look at my picture, I believe it's the 2nd hose from the left. The rusty one which is the culprit.

I wonder if this recall applies to the problem:

You were correct tech. It does look like it is coming from the vent tube. Does anyone know if it is a big deal to replace? It looks like I will have to drop the tank, but that doesn't look too bad. I will try to get the parts tomorrow. Does the tank disconnect from the filler tube at the clamp shown in Redturbo's picture below? I just check on the recall and it dosn't apply to this leak. I called Volvo hoping I could get them to bite but no luck. Thanks for all the info. and quick responses.

Sometimes you camn replace it without removing the tank.
It all depends on whether you can get to the clamps or not.
I can get to about 95% of them and remove them.
If you have to drop the tank to remove the filler neck open the fuel door and look where the rubber comes through the body. You will see a thin round like C clip in the rubber.
Remove it and push the rubber in. Then everything will drop with the tank.
But you will have to remove all the fuel line and pump wiring before dropping it.

I also heard the tank had to be dropped, but if Tech said it doesn't, that is GREAT news.

The recall puts some new bushings or some rubber stops or soemthing. I forget exactly what it does, but if you look at my pictures, there are some shiny new bolts. That was done during the recall.
