Default Gas Mileage down

Hello! My 1995 Volvo 850, 230,000 is starting to get about 5 miles per gallon less than it used to, 20 mpg instead 25 mpg before. I have noticed it is a little chuggy when I start moving and the rpm's seem higher too. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Shirley

Turbo or NA? Is there a check engine light on? any increased soot out of the tail light? How's the tune on the car - plugs/wires/rotor/cap? Its not uncommon for an oxygen sensor gone bad to drop mileage but that usually presents with a check engine light. Start by inspecting vacuum lines (including the tree under the throttle cable spool cover), plugs, wires, air filter etc. Then go into the diagnostic port and see if there are any stored codes. volvotips.com has a good write up on how. If its a turbo, inspect the air tubing from the turbo to the intercooler to the MAF. Finally, inspect the MAF, idle air valve and intake for any dirt, oil etc. Clean if need be with CRC MAF cleaner.

Thanks for your response. It is not a turbo. I am going to take it in for a tune up tomorrow. I will ask them to check all the things you mentioned.
