Gasket seal question
I removed the intake hose to get it out and as above, even if you get it out you'll likely need to remove it to get the valve back into the intake hose correctly.
I did read where someone had a questionable fit when reassembly so they used silicone sealant to "help" the gasket seal to the valve.
I used a drill bit by hand to scrape the hard stuff and used carb cleaner to repeatedly soak it to get the rest.
It is where the black box gets vacuum from to pull the crankcase vapors back into the engine to burn them.
Removing the intake hose also gives you a chance to feel the turbo to see if there's any play in the shaft.

Phil, I don't understand some of your comments about this job. You should have torn everything out and installed all the new stuff, which would have included the house that connected to the PTC. Any instructions you had should have instructed you to pull that hose as well as that oil catch box to install that new short hose.
Also, if your car is a pre '96 you would have needed to disconnect & cleaned the EGR.

Is your car a turbo model? If you didn't see the EGR pipe in the picture above your car must not have EGR.
also forgot to mention earlier, I'm not real big on engine oil additives or flush is, the oil that you purchase and use everyday has plenty of detergent to clean out the inside of the motor when you do normal oil changes.

How about you do a Google search first and ask us second ??
You could have easily just done "Volvo 850 EGR" and come up with the same thing I did.
I've been helpful, I'm not trying to cut you off but now you're asking for ideas on cleaning the PTC when in my above reply I did say how to clean it and I'm sure here (Volvoforums), Volvospeed and Matthewsvolvosite all have articles on R&R the EGR and cleaning and same with the PTC.
You'll learn more searching and reading than just waiting to be spoon fed the info. The best part of doing you own research besides being independent is that you also come across stuff you need, stuff you find interesting or that you find later you remember something about something and you should do it. It's finding out about the little Volvo only quirks that's saved me a few times.
It's just a suggestion.

OUCH
The instructions I used were from a different site and not as inclusive but I do stand corrected as I should have done a more through search in the DIY section here. When I did the PCV work I did not remove the throttle body, just the intake hose that attaches to it.

Phil, thanks for understanding about asking you to search and not going through the roof
As for directions, I always try to find a couple and go through them as there are always different things someone does that's extra or neglected. That and I never take it for granted the the guy posting knew that much to begin with unless I do actually know him.

I have been only working on my old Mercedes diesel for a while now so I am re familarizing my self with all the stuff on a gasser. I just wish there was more room to get my hands in there. I ordered a throttle body gasket and a EGR gasket so I'll work on that and the PCT this weekend. I hope thats the end of back pressure.
