Default Having Problems With Starting and Shifting

Gosh I have not been on here for a very long time. I guess I kind of lost interest in working on my own cars.

I am down from three Volvos to just one. I still have my yellow 850, but I am having some problems with it intermittently not starting and not shifting when cold.

In the past I would just put in 3rd instead of Drive and it would shift fine but never not go to high gear even when I moved it up to Drive. It would go from anywhere from 5 to 12 miles before it would shift and this was only when it was less than about 50 degrees outside. Well the other day I found that if I jiggle the shifter real hard it would shift even if I left in Drive.

I also have a problem where it will not start if I shut it off and try to restart it before it warms up, but it normally starts right up the first time. Last Friday it would not start at all, but when I got home from work it started fine. Does not seem like it's the battery since it does not do anything. It's almost like it's not in N or D when it won't start.

So I'm thinking the two problems might be related. Is there some kind of switch or something in the console that might be causing this? I can remember changing a switch in there on one of my other cars, but I was thinking it was my V70 not one of my 850's.

Guess I'm getting too old for this crap since I can't remember which car is which.

Long time no see Jim; I was out of the forum for almost 4 years myself (return to the States as a legal permanent resident in October). Tech's out at the moment; the reason is in the Off-Topic section I believe.

PNP or Microswich for the shifter? Any codes in the ECU?

JPN, so what part of the country are you now living in? If I'm not mistaken I believe you were in the Chicago area the last time you were in the US. I remember when you left I could not understand why you had to leave the US when I see all these Indian people where I work.

I didn't have a chance to check codes last night, but I know the CEL is not on.

I'm with JPN. I don't think the PNP will toss a code.

Good to hear from you Jim. Sold my yellow sedan last summer after I picked up a black '95 T-5R wagon. I'm really using this wagon.

Is the PNP and the Micro Switch the same thing? And are they in the console or under the hood? I was under the impression there was a micro switch in the console and the PNP switch was under the hood. How much work is it to replace these items?

So you got a black wagon and sold the yellow sedan. Never found the yellow wagon? But you avitar shows a yellow wagon? I would still love to find a yellow wagon.

I am currently in Ipswich, MA.

I had to leave the country in March 2007 because my "Practical Training Permit (one-year work permit)" had expired. This time I got green card after some 13 attempts and no longer have to worry about the immigrations status. I assume there are so many illegal immigrants in the United States that the Dept of Homeland Security can't even keep tack of all of them.

The PNP switch is riding on top of the tranny and is shaped like a sector/Asian fan. The microswitch is under the console.

Man, there are so many problems with immigration in this country, it's a shame. At least you are trying to do the right thing.

I got a black wagon because I could not afford a yellow one. I did find a few yellow wagons but they were so hi I could not get them. Got a steal on this black one. The rear of the yellow wagon is kinda a dream car. From what I understand, there were 35 yellow wagons and 250 black wagons sent the the US. Now, I believe there are 32 yellow wagons and about 48 black wagons. Most people like the looks of the black wagons and now the values are about the same. Yellow still ahead.

The PNP is on top of the tranny like JPN said. Here is a good link about it:

I got the PNP switch, but I had some surgery on my foot and just could not get around to doing the work myself. So I hired a local shop that knows nothing about Volvos to put the switch in. I just got it back and it's not right at all. The tranny arrow on the dash is flashing. It starts out in what feels like 3rd gear. It seems ok once you get it moving, but it will not downshift when you step on it. I didn't go far, but it feels like it might be shifting between 3rd and 4th. Feels like a real dog. Makes no difference in Sport, Econ or Winter mode.

They said they will take it back in on Monday and do what they can do or just put the old switch back on. Hopefully it's just some kind of allignment or adjustment. They do not have the equipment to read the ODB2 port on that old a car.

I cleared all the codes out of the ODBI one codes and that got it out of Limp Mode. There were several codes in multiple ports. I checked the ODBII port and there were no codes. As soon as I start it and put in gear it went back into Limp Mode. I checked the ODBII and got a P0705, cleared it with the scanner and that got it out of Limp Mode, but every time I put it in gear it would go back and throw a P0705.

I looked up the code and got P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit malfunction (PRNDL Input), which makes sense.

You might want to offer to bring in instructions on adjusting it. Maybe they are doing some "this looks right" instead of actually knowing how to set it up properly.

There is of course the dealer tool. The part number for the alignment tool from Volvo is 9995475 and I think it's 30-45 bucks ??

Then there is this trick:
QUOTE(Bay 13 Admin @ Dec 4 2004, 12:02 AM)
I have heard from members that the Reverse light method works very well. Once you have the PNP hooked up and before you tighten things down on the switch, put your car in reverse, and then move the switch, left then right, noting when the reverse lights go on and off, then pick the center of the swing.
Hopefully it's the switch and maybe just a little adjustment will make the computer happy and quit flashing that arrow at you !!
Good luck on Monday.

Just a quick follow up. The mechanic had it aligned fine, but when he plugged the connector in he pushed one of the pins out on the receiving side. He pushed than back in with his thumb and it quit throwing codes. Running great now. I'm finally driving it again!!!

Jim, I see you are still "here". I sold the C-70 years ago and just bought a new C30. I noticed JPN's name and I understand TECH is still here. Good to see you kept one of your 850s

in 2006 I bought a Mazda MX-5 Special Edition. I still have it and it has a custom interior, exterior, and drive train. I only drive it about 3,500 miles per year. Every sticker that came on the auto, to include the under body stickers ie: on the shocks and etc. are still there. I also bought a 1965 Austin Healey Mark III in London in 1965. I have my original tags (DUL 571C) on the auto.............never had U.S. tags, I brought it over with Diplomatic status and so have parts that were illegal here in the states. But what is unbelievable is that I only have 6,200 miles on the little car. It has been in storage for years. At any rate Jim, the Mazda MX-5's are bullet proof and a blast to drive.

I was thinking more about a BMW Z4 or possibly a Nissan 350Z. Is the MX-5 the Miata or is it something different? A 65 Austin Healey does sound cool. I had a 1980 Porsche 911SC for a while. Loved it, but when I lost my job and had no work for quite some time it was the 2nd thing to go. Travel Trailer was the first to go. Kids are all grown and out of the house with families of their own and I have a decent job, so I can afford a little something, but nothing outrageous. I always buy used.

Yup.........the MX-5 is a Miata. The NC is the third iteration of the Miata and Mazda quit putting the Miata badge on them and instead started the MX-5 badging. Next year the new ND model will be available. I bought my NC when first available in 2006 and have just turned 20,000 miles on it. The last four years I have purchased four new autos. The C-30 I just bought in March. I truly enjoyed my old C-70 and kept it for quite a number of years but I'll tell you Jim...............mechanically it was the absolute worse vehicle I ever owned! This is the last year the C-30 will be sold and I wanted one. I tried to buy one in 2008 when they first came out but the dealer would not sell me the model that Volvo sent him. Seemed that Volvo made the dealers hang on to the car that was sent to them for three months before they would be able to sell it. Essentially they were demos and the delivery date for a new one was three to four months.
