Default Heading out

Well, today is the day. We are heading to South Dakota from Washington State in the 95 850. Car has 232,000 miles but I am not too concerned. A/c has been checked and filled, oil and filters changed, new tires on and balanced, all fluids filled, spare checked, tool kit and jack in car, and a few small spare parts (including fuel pump and fuel pump relay are packed)

Also have my AAA card just in case. Should be a fun trip with the family. Taking my computer with, so I will stay in touch and yell for help on the odd chance something pops up.

If you've maintained it and prepared it for the trip, don't worry!

While I have 10 Volvos (yes, 10), we just drove 2000+ miles to Chicago and back in our Grand Caravan. It now has 204,000 miles on it. We took the van because we could sleep in it (rear seats removed).

I replaced all the wear items and most of the suspension bits before we left. I've run synthetic oil in it since we bought it with 150k miles on it. It was a great trip.

We just got back from a 1200 mile trip in the S70 GLT that I replaced the head on around the 4th of July. Ran like a champ. It was super hot going to Austin TX, 104+. Air was nice and cold and we didn't get pulled over for speeding I replaced all of the dash lights before we left and also fixed something else that I can not remember. I don't think it burned a drop of oil.

You'll be fine. I use to run my 740 GLE all over the country with 400,000 on it.

Just an update. Made it to Butte Montana with no issues. Running mostly at 80 MPH according to the GPS. Have a very slight vibration in the front at speeds over 65, but I think the guy that balanced the tires didn't do a very good job.

Anyway, averaging about 28-29 MPG with the air on, four adults in the car, a full trunk of stuff and speed around 80. No oil used so far. More to come tomorrow.

Well, we are in South Dakota. No issues except for the very slight vibration I mentioned before. Will be here for a couple days, then the return trip! Car now has 233,000 on it!

LOL, try to get the tire balanced if you have a few minutes. Just the one or axle that has the vibration. I actually told one guy the speeds at which I had the vibration. He told me that they usually balance at 45 mph. I told him to run it up past that because I was having the vibrations at higher speeds. It did help.

Good to hear that things are going smooth.

Well, we just got home from the trip. 6 states, 3503 total miles, average trip speed of 65 MPH (Many miles of that were over 80 MPH), Average MPG was 27.3 (A/C on almost all the way, trunk fully loaded, four adults in car), lowest elevation was 10 feet below sea level, and highest elevation was 8859 feet above sea level in Yellowstone National Park. Car performed FLAWLESSLY!!! Only thing even remotely negative was it used about a pint of oil, and popped a P0172 code once (reset the code and it never came back)

Not too bad for a 17 year old car with 235,000 miles on it!

Glad to be home,

Glenn

Oh yeah, lowest gas price I saw was $3.43 in Montana, and highest was $4.19 here on the good old WA state coast!

Nice. I didn't think you'd have any problems. I know what you mean about being glad to be home after so many miles on the road. 850 Are great road cars.
