Unhappy '88 740 Heater blower kaput

I'm think I may be equally looking for answers and just needing to let off some frustration.

My 1988 740 Turbo Wagon has had problems with the heater fan. My local Volvo mechanic has replaced the fan motor three times over the past 5 years or so, I think replacing the resistor at the same time.
And once again, the fan has quit. Not good for defrosting, etc.
I can't locate the fuse--that part of the fuse block burned during heavy A/C load and the mechanic put in an inline fuse somewhere I can't locate, but I _think_ the motor is still getting power. How do I know? It used to be I could kick the panel under the glove box and the motor would start up, or bump it by opening up the panel. Now, when I switch the fan on, I hear a click like the coils of the motor are getting power, but the fan doesn't run.

At this point, I'm ready to sell the car--everything else functions OK--but I think having a working fan would help the car sell for a better price.
I don't really want to put in a lot of time trying to fix this, and I know a trip to the mechanic would cost me $100 or more, taking a big percentage our of the car's selling value.
So....maybe I just need to sell it without the fan working. But I'll welcome suggestions.

Thanks in advance, folks...and don't worry, we're keeping my wife's beloved '83 240.

Those years have the problem of getting water in there from the cowling and this damages the motor... I bet the motors you had put in were aftermarket ones, not that it's any less annoying.... Get a junkyard one, make sure it's OEM, DIY... That's what I'd do.

The pre 90 7's often do have problems with water as Lev mentions. If the jy isn't a viable option, you can save a bundle by purchasing an AC Delco blower motor for a mid 80's mid size GM car. I have the numbers at home...could post them this evening. Swapping the motor on a 7 series is a cake walk. Pull the knee bolster/panel remove the ecu and iirc the bracket, remove the 6 bolts holding the motor to the case and remove. Using the ACD version, you may have to swap connectors but, price wise, you're talking $25 versus $100+ for a genuine new blower. 7's are notorious for the blower melting the fuse panel when dying and pulling way too many amps. The best way to wire in an inline fuse is to do it right at the fuse panel and feed the two wires of the holder through the panel and having the fuse on top for easy access.

Default Yikes!

Product Search

$141.74

Yes, swiftjustice44, I'd appreciate the info to order an ACD. or maybe I'll just bail and sell without the heater working.

Great forum, I appreciate the help!

Woo hoo....a later find: http://www.amazon.com/VDO-PM129-Blow...ar=1&carId=002

Default yay! Success!

Thought I'd share my story....opened up the kick panel, bumped the fan, and I think the terminal may have been a tad loose. Ran into the house to get my meter, but didn't need it--when I turned on the ignition and the fan switch, I had air!

Just for the record, I found some good prices on replacement motors at rockauto.com.

thanks for the help, folks! My 740 and I took my recumbent bike out to a great ride today!
