Default Heater not working...

My daughter's 1994 850 Turbo's heater (fan?) just stopped working. I checked the fuses and they are ok. Any suggestions?

Thanks...Steve

Hello Steve,

Greetings from Chicagoland.

If the fuse is ok, it is either:
1) Fan (blower) motor itself
2) Blower resistor

Is the climate control of manual or is it automatic? If automatic, there may be some codes stored in the ECU (indicated by blinking REC & AC LED's on the panel). But even with some codes in the ECU, the climate control should work to some extent, so my guess is either of the above. Parts are pricey, but if you can do replacement by yourself, it'll at least save labour (in this particular case, Haynes manual would suffice). I replaced my blower unit and it was $139 (Behr, German) from FCP Groton. Wait to see if someone else has another idea.

Good luck,

JPN

If you have the MCC system and the fan doesn't work on any speeds, but both fuses are good then either something is jammed in the motor or it's burnt out and due to the high current draw the resistior is probably fried. If your fan works only on speed 4 than the resistor is bad most likely due to high current caused by an old motor with bad bearings. In both situations I would replace both components and be done with it.

If you have the ACC system listen to JPN

No matter what add a cabin air filter if your car doesn't already have one it will cut back on the crud entering your car and gumming up the motor.
