Default Help I Cracked My Transmission!

Okay, I got the engine out of the car, replaced all the seals, timing belt, water pump, replaced all the engine mounts (I'm surprised my engine was staying in my car with the old mounts) and all I had left was to take the engine off the stand and reconnect the tranny, and put it back in the car.

I started having delusions of grandger and started to think this wasn't so bad... then I heard this cracking sound and tranny fluid ALL over the garage floor.

I am of two thoughts, Can I just replace the broken plate or will I be purchasing a new or rebuilt transmission in the morning?

WOW good crack on that thing there.

I would try to find a junk tranny and try to buy the plate.

Do you have any Volvo specialist shops near you?

If so check with them they might have a junker there they might be able to sell you the cover from.

+1; seems like you can just replace the plate if you can locate one.

So...How did it crack?

just based on what Im seeing, not reading what was done...it looks like the crack was caused by something interfering with the coverinternally, and as the perimeter bolts were cinched down, the thing snapped from stress.

Or did it take a tumble off a cliff?

I believe it is called a thrust converter. It was not properly seated back in the transmission. I thought I had it in as far as it would go but I guess one set of teeth was not lined up and created that pressure you were speaking of.

I had a pickle of a time trying to find just an end cap. Everyone wanted to sell me a new tranny. I found a transmission parts store in Miami called Lory Transmission Parts. Those guys were AWESOME! I got the end cap with no problem. I thought the $150 price tag was a bit high but considering the alternative of a new tranny....

We got the engine back in the car late last night. Today we are reconnecting the hoses and wires. There is one hose I cannot figure out where the heck it came from. If I can't figure it out by tomorrow I will put a pic up and ask for some help.

Thanks for everyone's help.
