Hey everyone.
I need some troubleshooting advice.
My 1993 850 GLT Non turbo a.k.a. "Volva"is having problems starting now that its freezing weather here in Canada.
It has progressively getting worse and now its to the point where it wont start at all unless I use starter fluid spray.
Symptoms are as such:
Doesn't fire during cranking - I can spend 10 minutes cranking and it won't start, but once it starts it runs fine no issues at all. It even starts up no problem within about 30 minutes or so after shut down.
I have had a problem sometimes when entering the highway from an on ramp the engine dies even though its turning over because it's in gear. On a few occasions the engine fires back up and I re merge with traffic and the car carries on as if noting had happened, and sometimes it doesn't catch and Ipull over and roll to a stop. It would start back up after cranking for 3 - 5 minutes.
When turning the key to the on position I can hear the fuel pump priming and also I can hear the fuel pump relay clicking.
It has a brand new battery which was tested before I bought it.
It also has a brand new fuel filter.
It doesn't produce any ECU codes.
I checked the Camshaft position sensor connector for corrosion or damaged wires and it's fine.
How should I go about trouble shooting this problem?
Could it be a faulty fuel pressure regulator?
or a faulty fuel pump?
or a faulty fuel pump relay?
or faulty injectors?
My poor Volva, shes cries with every crank of her crushed soul....![Frown](https://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Please help me help her get back to her normal
Thanks Dreas

Recent popular culprits (some of which you have already addressed):
- Faulty fuel pump.
- Faulty fuel pump relay.
- Faulty CPS sensor.
- Faulty ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor.
- Faulty MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor/its connector/wiring.
- Neglect.
When was the last tune-up, BTW?
Wait for Tech & see attached.

OK I will try those steps you listed.
As for a tune up I changed the spark plugs, air filter, starter, fuel filter, pcv box and a few pcv lines, charcoal box, oil filter and oil about 1 month ago.
How do you check all those sensors?
I have a multi meter but I would need the specs to test the sensors and circuits right?

How about distributor cap, rotor & the ignition wires?
See my 2nd reply at the following thread for a semi-complete list of tune-up items:

See attached; you may or may need Volvo equipment.

MAF. Happy now?
Only 1996 & 97 seem to be affected with this:

If the pages were incomplete, you can do a search by yourself:

OK so I decided to get into it tonight. In checked the cap and rotor and it didn't look so good.
I than proceeded to take a spark plug out and check how good it was sparking and noting, well almost noting. I few weak sparks but for sure that needs to be replaced. Tomorrow morning I will buy a new cap and rotor and install it.
If that doesn't work I suspect that the coil pack is going or gone. Does any one know how to check to see if its good or not?
And Thank You JDM
I really do appreciate your expert advice, you obviously know your stuff!
P.S. Sorry I didn't thank you before, I rushed to get working on the car so I could grab some parts from the store before it closed.

I understand the situation, thanks for your thanks
!
I would only buy OEM parts rather than parts from local shops. Volvos are extremely choosy when it comes to parts. My 2nd reply at the thread I introduced has all OEM designations. Many of us here either use FCP Groton, eEuroparts & others; I myself always liked FCP:
FCP Groton:

eEuroparts:

IPD:

As for the plugs, I recommend genuine Volvo. Many people seem to have had problem with Bosch multi-electrode versions.
Ask Tech & other members to see if a faulty ignition switch could cause your symptom.
I will reply later in regard to testing the coil (10-13-hour difference between the Stateside & Japan). Hopefully, in the meantime other members could chime in.
Good night,
JPN
