I think they just pull off, but not really sure. Did you look up under it to see if there is some kind of clamp or c ring?

Replacing gear **** and gaiter

To remove gear shift ****
-Cut off the outer casing on the **** with a knife
-Remove inner sleeve using pincers so the locking groove is exposed.
-Remove ****.

To remove gear shift gaiter
-Remove cover under parking brake lever
-Detach gear shift gaiter from center console by pressing on rear of the gaiter on the snap fasterners from below via the hole under the parking brake.
-Pull off gaiter from the gear shift.

not sure. what i would try would be twisting it off with a channel locks or something which would just bend that clip out a little bit.

i personally think its a poor design on multiple levels.

well good news guys. after a day of trying and getting pissed off i got it off without cutting the leather. i used a small flat head screw driver and pryed under the **** where the c clip is . if you pry it far enough away from the shifter you can pull the handle out. it was still hard to pull out but i got it off in one piece.

Dear Tony et al.,
thanks for all that. One diagram showed that it was a screw on. (1994 850 5 speed) Was that the case with either of you?

Mark, is the c clip plastic? And there are two of them? How do you take it off without breaking the c clip? (I suppose it doesn't matter since those should be easily replaceable--although you never know with a Volvo.) Also, the **** pulls straight out? No unscrewing? Thanks.
