My automatic transmission shifter will not engage in any gear other than neutral or drive. The button on the shifter appears locked and can not be pressed. The transmission progresses through the gears while driving. Any ideas?

 

If I understand you correctly it sounds like the old sticky shifter **** problem.
IPD sells new ones, under 40 bucks.

 

Are you saying that your car will not drive? Will it move / shift into any gear and drive in any direction?

The button on the shifter sometimes gets stuck in, it's like the spring gets stuck or something. You can usually pull it out with your fingers. If that is not it let us know so we can find you some other solution.

 

I believe to remove these *****, remove the clip or collar on bottom and pull up very hard.

 

I'm still not sure what his problem is. The transmission not engaging or the **** not moving. The **** just pulls off.

but if it does not open, just search the username volvonest in Ebay and I am sure you will find them. I got the repalcement button with a new spring included for 19.99 SHIPPED.

Passing this along since I spent a while searching for on cheaper than IPD...and found it. Worked perfect on our 98 S70, works like new again.

I had this problem when I first got my 2000 s70 GLT, I just sprayed some WD-40 down in the shifter and it fixed it for me.
