Default i give up

I am driving my self nutty trying to figure out the dianostic code pulling thing. I have an '95 850 turbo. I wonder how everyone but me seems to get codes left and right. Do I need a plug in scanner or something? The chilton's manual says something about a generic scan tool. Do I need one of these? Any help is greatly appreciated. BTW, does anyone else hate the Chilton's book?

The 95 was kind of a split year.Do you have a plug in the center console next to the cigar lighter? If you do it will be under the coin tray.
Also try following the link I have inserted and see if it helps.Look under the hood and see if you have the diag block. It is next to the washer fill.

I have the OBD-II connector in the console, so does that mean I can only get codes with the OBD-II scanner? Thanks for the reply.

If you don't have the other diag plug under the hood yes that is the only way.If you have an Auto Zone or Advanced Auto Parts near you they pull codes for free.

Haynes is pretty good.
Look for a program called VADIS (Volvo Aftersales Diagnostic Information System)
my dad got a copy of ebay a year ago, but not sure if they have them anymore.
