Default Intermittent heat blower

I have a 94 850 Turbo.... up until the outdoor Temps started dipping down in the single digits the heater blower worked wonderful .... the problem occurs when the outdoor temp drop down into the single digits ... when starting the car in the morning the heather fan will not come on and the dash REC and AC lights flash on and off ........ but.... after driving for a while, all of a sudden the heater fan comes on and works wonderfully the rest of the day .. .....the next morning of single digit temps .... same sequence of events.
can anyone suggest what to try, look for or replace ..
Thanks

sounds like the blower cage may be sticky when its really cold causing it to draw too much current for the climate control computer (thus the REC/AC error warning). Are you able to get the blower to work on manual settings? You may also need to replace the blower resistor - tough to say, but temperature can play with a "cold solder" joint (ie a crack in a soldered part).

Thank You for the reply.... sounds like when things warm up a bit, I'll be tearing into it ...
I'm not sure what you meant by "manual control" ?? .......

Do you have MCC or ECC? If the car has ECC and it is set to AUTO, the fan will not run until the engine temp reaches 128 degrees F.

OUTSTANDING Video's !!!!! Thank YOU! ......
Thank You for your reply and posting the Videos... Tremendously Helpful and Informative.
a few quick questions/comments ...(thanks to your video) I have the ECC unit and you said that the fan will not run until the engine has warmed up to 128 degrees .. so when I look at the temp gage and it is showing the engine at normal operating temp... the fan should be running? if not, is there a sensor that can be replaced?

Also very thankful for the video showing to check the heater core ... I've been getting a whiff of what I am thinking is antifreeze when the heater blower first kicks on.... so I will be shopping for a heater core today..
Again Robert, Thank You!

Here's a couple URLs to check out - volvotips.com - you can look through an online Volvo repair manual for the 850s for some test or root cause analysis procedures and volvopartswarehouse.com - you can get part numbers and diagrams to see what plugs into what... That will help you find the right temp sensor part etc. Also for your replacement of the heater core project, there's some good write ups on this forum on how to open the console and drain/stopper the hoses etc. You may want to inspect first before buying parts as it may be the hose connection vs the core itself. Some good DIY fix ideas there as well.
