This picture was also on that link. I'm gonna have to try hooking the wires to those locations soon. I wonder if clearing the maintenance light is the same as clearing the trouble codes?

Did you actually look in your Instrument Panel if yours is a VDO or Yazaki?

Based on present knowledge, not on the 96s and 97s. However if you could find the Computer Line Diagram for your 1996 I can try to modify the DIY tool.

There is info spread out all over forums (Volvo and others) and documents, so I decided to do it myself (post # 19, Page 2 of this thread) put everything in 1-single page for (myself first) people to print it, build it (I also provided part numbers) and included step-by-step instructions on how to use it.

Special thanks should also go to JPN (inactive moderator here), who had contributed a lot on it. I just built on top of what these guys had done, used my previous experience on building similar tools for Mercedes, Toyota, etc. and posted it.

However, this tool does not substitute the Volvo proprietary Scanner (shown on Volvo FSM, post # 37).

The DIY tool provides for 1996-1997 many, if not most of the functionalities of the Diagnostic Box found on 93-95 Volvos. Not all functionalities; one is for example resetting the "Service Reminder" light.

Yes. There is no grommet. Only the hour and minute buttons and the trip reset ****. I was pretty sure I've looked for that before but my wife was driving the car saturday. I was looking through a large pdf manual for the 850. Then i realized its for the 1995. Having trouble finding the 96 wire diagrams. That picture i put up; the red pin locations are where a member said his draper tool connected to. If we can figure out the wires to put in each one, then test a series of button inputs, it may work.

I've gotta check out a new problem with my car not wanting to start this morning, when I get home. I think it's the fuel pump relay. I'll do some testing after I fix that little problem.

What grommet? What are you looking at? Trip-meter has 4 (four) digits, three that go from 1-999 and a fouth one that turns every 1/10 mile.

Post a photo of your odometer and I will tell you if you have Yazaki.

Fuel Pump Relay: didn't you say you just replaced that? If not, then, sure FP relay is known to trigger codes.

The one that is easy to reset has a grommet on it, from what I read. Mine doesn't have a grommet. It is the VDO style.

The only thing I've replaced on this car since I got it is the PCV system. I had the codes checked at Autozone a while back and they said there were random misfire codes in there. As I'm driving I can feel it bog down and while it bogs I can hear something like a tick twice. It happens every few seconds. Pretty annoying.

Yesterday morning I started it and it died after a couple seconds. It wouldn't start back up for a couple minutes. I pulled the 103 relay last night and took it apart, but nothing looked burned or bad inside of it. Also, it doesn't make any unusual noises, so I don't think it is the culprit. It didn't do it after work either. Maybe it's the coil?

Default New to Volvos and having trouble with codes

Hey everyone,

I have a few codes that I cannot figure out. Some I can but the OBD11 reader displayed some I am not familiar with. Can anyone help me out? I have a 2004 S40 T5. Here is a list of ALL the codes that the reader displayed. The first ones I understand and when I got the car I knew some of the ignition coils had been replaced (cyl 1 and 4) and that the previous owner had some trouble with engine miss at start up. The bottom four "codes" are the ones I have no idea about.

p0000
p0300
p0303
p0301
p0294- This says cylinder 12 misfire ????
C2FD2
C3C6A
C1F48
B1B00

Other than random misfire at start up, I have no other driveability or engine running issues. I am looking at replacing spark plugs and coils but wanted to chase these codes first to see if there is not something more serious.

THANKS IN ADVANCE

You can Google "Volvo S40 U1900" and read some posts. The U1900 code refers to a communications error in the CAN (controller area network) - possibly pointing to a problem in the instrument cluster but there are some other possible causes.
