My new baby....96 850 Turbo
Just picked up my 96 850 Turbo. Red with the 97 850R wheels. Has approx. 95k miles with all major service done. Totally loving it right now. I'm a total newbie to the 850 turbo.
Anything I should be aware of? Preventative maintence? etc....???....
Will be posting pics soon.
THANKS, KEN

The 2 main things to watch out for are 1. The evaperator leaks 2. The ABS control modules go bad. From the dealer it is about $1500.00 to have either repaired.Other than that they are good cars.Just keep an eye on those things. If you have any other quiestions feel free to ask.

OK, my A/C is good right now and there is a label saying that there's dye in the system. So I'm assuming the previous owner checked and no leaks. ABS module, how would that go out???....I'm guessing that is an electronic issue, condensation, shortage...???
History of the car is, first owner bought it then traded it in at the Volvo dealership for a newer Volvo I'm assuming at around 76.5k. Second owner buys it from the dealership a year and a half ago, currently has 95k and recently all major services done, timing belt, tensioner, serpentine belt, etc.
Everything is working great for me. I'm expecting a good long run with it.
Plans are to keep it stock...tired of all the sport car drama (kids revving at you, racing, etc.) as I've been there, done that with my Supra and Galant VR4. Couldn't stay away from the "turbo", so I got the 850.
Yes when the abs module goes bad it shorts internaly. If your abs light starts flashing at times that will most likely be the cause until then dont worry about it.Good luck sounds like you found a good car.
I really like the Volans (850R wheels) I have contemplated picking up some for my 850 Turbo as well. Yeah, the ABS control module is bound to go out on these cars. From my independent Volvo shop, it ended up being $450 for the part and an hour of labor, so a little over $500. FYI: Dealers rip you off! I stopped going to Volvo dealers after my warranty ran out. If you go to a dealer, it would end up being 1200-1500 for the ABS module. Congratulations on the new car!! Welcome to Volvo! You made a good choice with the 850!

I should have some day shots tomorrow as I will be giving it a full wash, wax, and detail.
Hmmm, why does that ABS module seem scary???....
So why does it go out??? Not because it's old right???

They were just poorley made. Some i've seen last a very long time and i've seen them go bad in a year or two.Keep your chin up if it goes bad and you can't replace it you just wont have ABS but you can still drive the car.
