The thermostat on the airbox regulates where air is coming from, so what you're talking about doesn't sound like the stat. On cold days the air will be drawn in from above the exhaust manifold to preheat it and help bring the engine up to temp quicker. After a bit the flap then directs fresh "cold" air from the front above the radiator to be inducted.

Sorry, I did not see the answer and I still need the answer. It is not on the diagram that is on the hood on my 1998 V70 non-turbo.

One off the air filter goes to the front lower portion of the box. There is a valve there.
The other goes over to the engine. One plastic hose is usually white and the other is black.
