On cold days the air will be drawn in from above the exhaust manifold to preheat it and help bring the engine up to temp quicker. Sorry, I did not see the answer and I still need the answer. It is not on the diagram that is on the hood on my 1998 V70 non-turbo.

One off the air filter goes to the front lower portion of the box. There is a valve there.
The other goes over to the engine. One plastic hose is usually white and the other is black.
