Default Need Help: Missing Part

I went to check out a '94 850 wagon earlier today and overall was pretty impressed with the car (a few problems here and there). I did however stop halfway through my test drive in a parking lot to pop the hood and check the oil. When I bent down I noticed a cylinder-shaped, heavy, black thing dangling below the headlight on the driver's side, dangling just in front of the wheel. I tried to tuck it in so it wouldn't fall off, and drove back to the dealer. When I got back, it had fallen off--but what I want to know is if anyone could tell me what the part is. Can't be too important because I drove around just fine with it detached.

Thanks!

Sounds like the charcoal canister. It is part of the Evap system.

Wait for the experts to get on.
